Vrije Ruimte Festival 2025

2025 was het jaar waarin we zowel het 750 jarige bestaan van onze stad Amsterdam vierden als ook het 10 jarige bestaan van Amsterdam Alternative. Om dit mooie jubileum kracht bij te zetten hebben we in 2025 twee speciale edities van onze krant gemaakt. Een (#059) over Vrije Ruimte en een (#060) over 750 jaar Amsterdam. Het grootste project van 2025 was de 2e editie van het Vrije Ruimte Festival. Een multi disciplinair, twee-talig, experimenteel doch toegankelijk festival voor jong en oud, dat plaats vond in tien verschillende locaties op tien verschillende data tussen maart en september 2025.

Locaties
De locaties die in 2025 deelnamen aan het Vrije Ruimte Festival waren: OT301, GROND, Ru Paré, Cinetol, De Appel, OCCII, Treehouse NDSM, Filmhuis Cavia, Plantage Dok en Het Groene Veld. Allemaal vrijplaatsen die bij AA zijn aangesloten en voor elke locatie was in overleg met de programma makers van die plek een inspirerend programma gemaakt dat zowel bij de plek als het Vrije Ruimte Festival paste. De programma’s varieerden van muziek tot film, workshops, exposities, performance, dans, publieke discussies enzovoorts. Een mooie serie momenten waarop we de aandacht maar weer eens vestigden op het belang van Vrije Ruimte in de stad.

Blooming GROND

De coöperatieve nachtclub

Veel clubgangers voelen zich emotioneel betrokken bij hun favoriete nachtclub en/of festival. De mensen op de dansvloer maken - in een wisselwerking met de artiesten - een nachtclub tot wat het is. Toch is er vrijwel altijd een commerciële uitbater die er met de winst vandoor gaat en is het voor de bezoekers niet duidelijk hoe prijzen bepaald worden en hoe de nachtclub op financieel gebied in elkaar steekt. 
Elk hippe nachtclub heeft zijn mond tegenwoordig vol over community. Maar wat betekent het woord community als degenen in die community eigenlijk alleen maar consument zijn? Wat nou als deze community ook daadwerkelijk deel neemt in het eigenaarschap  en de organisatie van de club? Wat zou dat betekenen voor de club en en de betrokkenheid van de bezoeker?  
Op donderdag 10 april organiseren Amsterdam Alternative en Commons Lab in Ru Paré een bijeenkomst waarin we verkennen hoe de eerste Amsterdamse coöperatieve nachtclub eruit zou kunnen zien.

Prom

Thursday 8 May - Cinetol

On 8 May, Cinetol will host its very first Prom. This will be a collaboration between Bandgurl666, Prom Vagabonds and Schorem, Cinetol’s (post)punk mini festival. Guests are encouraged to dress up in classic prom attire. 
The lineup consists of darker, dissonant yet dancable acts that will have you both moshing and slow dancing. There will be a prom photos booth, punch served at the bar, and plenty of decorations.

Cuts and Currencies

Day 1: Funding cuts and Moving Beyond State Dependency 
Last year we saw many art and cultural institutions get defunded by municipal and national funding bodies in the Netherlands. This has a trickle effect on art workers in the Netherlands, and on what kind of institutional, artistic and curatorial practices are supported. This raises urgent questions: How can we read the current defunding of institutions? How do political ideologies, particularly neoliberal market principles, shape the allocation and design of art subsidies? 
Does this pressure to commodify art undermine its potential for genuine political dissent? How can art institutions and artists remain resilient and address structural precarity in the long term? As we navigate state reliance under the current political order, we will discuss how we can foster collective resource-sharing in an increasingly competitive funding landscape.

Day 2: Learning from Community Currencies
Many artists and communities use alternative currencies to redistribute value and keep resources circulating locally. These currencies allow them to control their means of exchange, advance their interests, and operate independently of banks, the mainstream economy, and national currencies. By implementing community currencies, local economies can mobilise underutilized resources, meet basic needs, and foster economic resilience.
Could creating a local currency help strengthen connections and the economy within the Amsterdam Alternative network? We’ll explore this question with various experts.

Amsterdam Global Village

Zondag 15 Juni - Filmhuis Cavia

Filmhuis Cavia unearths a true masterpiece of Dutch cinema. Arguably Johan van der Keuken’s most important piece of work, the Amsterdam-born director here takes on the near-impossible task of developing a picture of Amsterdam in all of its different communities and identities. What results from it is nothing short of a long love letter to the city in all of its 180 nationalities.
In typical van der Keuken’s style, he strings together many different stories, from attending a Ghanian funeral to dancing at the Roxy club, and from a traditional fishmonger in the Jordaan to the living room of a Chechen refugee. The tour guide on this journey through the city is Khalid, a courier crossing the city on a moped, carrying film rolls and prints.
The film was published in 1996, just a few years before the emergence of an increasingly harsh public debate against migration in the Netherlands, eventually leading to the affirmation of far-right and racist politicians such as Geert Wilders. To put the film in perspective with the development of Amsterdam since then, the screening will be followed by a talk where the current situation of the city will be explored, trying to imagine together new scenarios we would like to bring about.”

The culminating event of First Timers Festival Amsterdam 2025! After a series of instrument workshops we will welcome a variety of new musicians and bands to the stage. First time edition in Amsterdam.
First Timers Festival Amsterdam is a new and hopefully recurring initiative aimed to demystify and diversify DIY music!

Art in Action  

Saturday  5 July - Treehouse NDSM

Art in Action is a community-driven event focused on connecting and creating bonds through participatory art projects and interactive workshops. The activities cover a wide range of artistic disciplines, themes and methodologies, and include options for both adults and kids. Some of them focus on creatively addressing subjects such as sustainability and cultural diversity, while others aim to dive straight into art forms and processes, like learning how to paint or make a song together with others. 

MEGA Open House

The program starts with moderated conversations between different Dokkers and tours through the buidling.  There will also be14 open studios, concerts, performances, food, drinks and mini workshops for everyone to participate, from young to old!
