AA Talks
In 2018 we started organizing AA Talks. These are public discussion nights featuring a panel or an individual speaker, on a specific topic. The subjects of the AA Talks are closely related to the topics and themes we write about in the newspaper (politics, arts & culture, climate, free spaces, anti racism etc.). The talks usually take place in one of the participating venues of AA or at related organizations. An important goal of these nights is to motivate the audience to take part in the discussion.

AA Talk #19 - Radical hope

Who would speak of enlightenment today? Who would speak of universalism? And who would dare speak of art in the same breath? All those who seek a future, all those who do not want to see our emancipatory aspirations crushed and discarded by a clash of empires. In this AA talk, Justin O’Connor, Patrycja Kaszynska and Sebastian Olma are going to argue that we can build our Radical Hope on these terms precisely because they have shaped our understanding of modernity. Radical Hope means to reject the idea that the end of the world is unavoidable, that we must make do in the ruins of the future. Instead, it urges us to salvage from the ruins of the past that which will help us to build a planetary future in-common.

Gezien de recente gebeurtenissen in Amsterdam als gevolg van de komst van 2600 Israëlische voetbalsupporters naar een wedstrijd tussen Ajax en Maccabi Tel Aviv, hebben we besloten dat de AA-talk van aanstaande woensdagavond over dat onderwerp zal gaan, en niet – zoals eerder aangekondigd – over de gevolgen van de verkiezing van Donald Trump als president van de VS voor Europa en Nederland. Maar omdat de manier waarop de media en politici van links tot rechts klakkeloos het ‘frame’ hebben gehanteerd dat hier sprake was van ‘antisemitische pogroms’ doet denken aan de desinformatie die er mede toe heeft geleid dat Trump opnieuw is verkozen, zijn er toch de nodige overlappingen. De AA-talk zal dus vooral inzoomen op de vraag hoe we weerstand kunnen bieden aan deze tendenzen en hoe we het narratief kunnen veranderen.
Given the recent events in Amsterdam resulting from the arrival of 2,600 Israeli soccer fans to a match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv, we have decided that Wednesday night’s AA talk will be about that topic, and not – as previously announced – about the impact of Donald Trump's election as US president on Europe and the Netherlands. But since the way the media and politicians from left to right have unquestioningly adopted the ‘frame’ that there were ‘anti-Semitic pogroms’ is reminiscent of the disinformation that helped lead to Trump’s re-election, there are nevertheless the necessary overlaps. So the AA talk will focus on how to resist these tendencies and change the narrative.

Amsterdam Alternative will talk to Nick about his new book Brutalism as Found: Housing, Form and Crisis at Robin Hood Gardens. In the book, Nick uses the demolition of the (in)famous Brutalist housing estate in East London as lens through which to analyse the current wave of urban regeneration. What can we learn today from the Brutalist movement in architecture that combined bold aesthetics with political vision and social ambition at a time when the accounting spreadsheets of international investors increasingly determine the future of our cities? How can the memory of a housing project such as Robin Hood Gardens inform and inspire our struggle for a more democratic and inclusive Amsterdam?

Deze AA Talk wordt georganiseerd in het kader van de webdocu die Amsterdam Alternative maakt over collectief eigendom. Tijdens deze avond gaan we in gesprek over wat digitaal collectief eigendom is of kan zijn. We zullen ideeën bespreken die gaan over eigendom, gebruik, beheer, gemeenschap, kennis en ontwikkeling rond digitale middelen. Denk aan kabels, servers, systemen, applicaties, hosting, privacy, social media, hacken, open source en licenties. Waar maken we het collectieve en waar lopen we tegen grenzen?
AA Talk #15 - Regeneratief denken en handelen

Op zaterdag 26 november organiseren Amsterdam Alternative en 7 Billion Presidents een publieke discussie in de OT301 over regeneratief denken en handelen. Van 17:00 tot 19:00 uur zullen we het met een panel van genodigde gasten gaan hebben over het opzetten van regeneratieve modellen. We bespreken bestaande inspirerende voorbeelden en kijken daarna samen naar het regeneratieve ondernemingsmodel dat 7 Billion Presidents gaat lanceren.
Onze samenleving heeft een enorme impact op de aarde en de mens. We consumeren met miljarden mensen tegelijk heel veel diensten en producten en onze honger naar meer lijkt niet te stillen. De productie en verkoop van al die gewenste welvaart zorgt voor onherstelbare schade aan de natuur, vergroot de ongelijkheid, zorgt voor stress en vele andere nadelige gevolgen. Onze huidge systemen zijn gebouwd op o.a. extractie, groei en rente en dat moet zo snel mogelijk veranderen. Een transformatie naar regeneratieve systemen waarin herstel, inclusiviteit en harmonie zijn verankert. Regeneratief betekent meer terug geven dan ontnemen. Regeneratieve systemen gaan niet over winst voor aandeelhouders maar het strijden voor en bouwen aan een nieuwe, eerlijke, optimistische harmonieuze wereld met gelijke kansen voor iedereen. Voor zowel menselijk leven als niet menselijk leven.
AA Talk #14 - Van broedplaats naar vrijplaats

Op 25 november van 14:00 tot 16:00 organiseren Amsterdam Alternative, Platform Beeldende Kunst en de Kunstenbond in de OT301 een publieke discussie over de status en de toekomst van vrijplaatsen in Amsterdam. Een programma waarin cultuurwerkers, vrijbuiters en andere stadsgenoten vertellen over hun gezamenlijke acties, zoektochten, hindernissen en successen in de strijd om betaalbare en duurzame woon- en werkruimte voor kunst, cultuur en buurtinitiatieven, in een steeds duurdere en ontoegankelijkere stad.
Het pleidooi voor meer gezamenlijke woon- en werkplekken in collectief beheer of bezit, steekt af tegen het huidige broedplaatsenbeleid in Amsterdam, Hierin zijn tijdelijke contracten de norm, wordt kunst en cultuur ingezet voor gentrificatie, hebben buurtbewoners weinig toegang tot de vrijgekomen panden in hun buurt voor sociale initiatieven en verdwijnt uiteindelijk veel sociaal vastgoed op de markt. Na 20 jaar broedplaats-beleid is het tijd voor nieuw beleid, waarin de gebruikers centraal staan in plaats van de portemonnee van de vastgoedontwikkelaar.
Deze Talk is onderdeel van de samenwerking tussen het Vrije Ruimte Festival en de Envisioning Free Space conferentie die wordt georganiseerd door Amsterdam Alternative en Space of Urgency. Een meerdaags programma met veel muziek, kunst, docu’s en discussies over nachtcultuur, inclusieve stedelijke ontwikkeling en vrije ruimte.
AA Talk #13 - Joy Division: Resetting our Collective Memory

Justin O’Connor, author of Reset: een nieuwe start voor kunst en cultuur, recently pusblished by Starfish Books will talk about the memory of Joy Division and what it means for an urban future beyond the so-called creative city.
Joy Division’s music and career play a foundational role in a narrative of Manchester’s “urban regeneration”, whereby a decaying industrial city was to become a vibrant, globally integrated post-industrial city-region. In this transformation – one that would soon be placed under the rubric of ‘creative city’ - popular music culture was held, by citizens and elites alike, to play a central role. Unlike many such ‘creative cities’ the popular music scene of Manchester had a globally recognised gravitas, in which narratives of regeneration could be closely linked to the collective memory of a generation.
The collective memory crystallised and mobilised by a particular moment of music experience, was also a period of transition from an “industrial” to a “post-industrial” society, which was increasingly framed as one from a welfare-centred to a ‘free-market” economy. Though punk and post-punk were stridently oppositional, they also had an emancipatory vision of art and culture (what Mark Fisher called ‘popular modernism’) which animated much of the new politics of culture that was to take off in the 1990s.
This talk aims to look back to that transformative moment, not as an ‘objective’ history but as an attempt to rub the collective memory ‘against the grain’ of the creative city. I am interested in exploring the collective memory around Joy Division/ Manchester in particular and more generally in the moment of punk and post-punk. Collective memory is social memory. It can be used politically-ideologically but it also organises people’s investment in their past, making sense of their life course and disappointments - how they did not ‘change the world’ (see Andrew O’Hagan’s 2020 book Mayflies). I wish to explore the extent to which the current conjuncture may or may not ‘reorganise’ the collective memory of punk/ post-punk; how this relates to ideas of class; and how this might change our relation to this ‘pre-history’ of the present.

Na diverse grotere en kleinere betogingen in Amsterdam, Rotterdam en andere steden, onder namen zoals Woonprotest en Woonopstand, is de grote vraag wat de volgende stap van de Nederlandse woonbeweging zou kunnen zijn. Heeft het zin om nog langer door te gaan met demonstraties of moeten we omzien naar andere, mogelijk radicalere, actievormen? Nu er in Den Haag een nieuw kabinet is geïnstalleerd, met Hugo de Jonge als kakelverse minister van Volkshuisvesting en Ruimtelijke Ordening, is deze vraag actueler en prangender dan ooit.

It is a truism to say that human societies have become exponentially interconnected, complex and interdependent. However, it is much less obvious to cope with the problem of how to access such an interconnected, complex and interdependent dimension of reality. We need to be able to do so in order to imagine how human societies could be transformed otherwise. As post-nuclear creatures faced with climate catastrophe, as the polymath Sylvia Wynter wrote, humans are now confronted with the historical task of co-existence within a common environment – despite the acutely uneven qualities of existence within this common condition. This is not only a political or social problem, but a conceptual problem as well.
We need new perspectives and frames of reference to learn to ‘see’ this common condition. It seems critical in my view, to construct possibilities in the name this common environment, precisely against an increasingly powerful far-right which, through ethno-nationalist isolationism, stands only for a narrow world picture of isolationism: a barricaded world exclusively for those of familiar, self-similar resemblance. As someone working in the field of theory, I approach this demand from a conceptual angle. In my AA talk, I won’t provide determinate answers to this problem but move through a series of questions in an effort to grasp the scope of the demand, and how such questions may help ground transformative thought for politics and activism.
How can co-existence at planetary dimensions be thought in a way that is not simply globalization 2.0? What new frames of reference does this dimension of being open up, including how we understand what being human may mean, and where the human stands within this planetary picture? How can we begin to navigate at these dimensions without subordinating differences to reductive forces of homogenization? How does this scale of co-existence transform our understanding of what the local even is? What can feminist legacies concerning care and maintenance labour teach us in learning to co-exist within the planetary dimensionality of life today – a scale that calls upon an expanded picture of care beyond the sphere of the personal, or the intimate? It is the hope with such questions that we may start sketching out an image of solidarity without sameness for this newly common space of domesticity constituted by a planetary condition. These are some of the questions I would like to address and discuss with you during the AA talk.

- In vrijplaatsen en broedplaatsen is sprake van inclusiviteit.
- Er moet van bovenaf een quotum voor inclusiviteit binnen broedplaatsen en vrijplaatsen ingezet worden.
- Vrijplaatsen zijn per definitie inclusief omdat het vrijheid en autonomie biedt.
- Exclusiviteit zit verankerd in het systeem van de culturele sector.
Context:
Een paar maanden geleden klopten twee studentes Culturele Maatschappelijke Vorming aan met de vraag of zij hun afstudeerproject bij Amsterdam Alternative konden doen. Dat kon en dus zijn zij aan de slag gegaan met een actie onderzoek. Doelstelling: een onderzoek naar inclusiviteit binnen vrijplaatsen en broedplaatsen. En vooral, de manier waarop AA met inclusiviteit om moet gaan inzake de plannen voor het Collectieve Eigendom.
De grote vraag is of inclusiviteit vormgegeven en/of opgelegd mag/moet worden?
Onder inclusiviteit verstaan wij: een afspiegeling van de bevolking waarin niemand uitgesloten wordt en we naast dat verschillende vormen van diversiteit zoals culturele diversiteit, religieuze diversiteit, en diverse geaardheden worden gewaardeerd, we vooral kijken naar wat verbindt en grote groepen mensen insluit.

We are very excited to have Brian Holmes with us for this AA talk. Brian Holmes is a cultural critic and self-taught cartographer, living in the US for the last decade after some twenty years in France. He's known for his art criticism and his theoretical work on global capitalism, which he now pursues as an artist, since there's no concept of "autonomous theorist" in the USA. He's a greybeard of the mailinglist nettime, collaborates with the Compass Group and Deep Time Chicago in the US, and more recently with Casa Río in Argentina. His current production swings between the magnetic poles of geography, geopolitics, earth science and tactical media, with a strong influence from the Anthropocene Campus program at HKW Berlin. Amsterdam Alternative is onlangs gestart met de basis van een nieuw plan. Het gaat over collectief eigendom. Over vrije ruimte en vrijplaatsen waar we samen als collectief de baas zijn. De eerste opzet van ons plan is hier te lezen.
Tijdens de AA talk op donderdag 24 januari zullen we gaan discussiëren en brainstormen over dit idee en met name over de invulling en uitvoering ervan.
AA talk #02 - Over Vrijplaatsen in Amsterdam

Wat is een vrijplaats? Het antwoord op deze vraag lijkt simpel, namelijk een plek waar je vrij kunt zijn. Maar wat is vrij zijn? En hoe verbindt je dit aan een maatschappelijke functie, hoe verhoudt vrijheid zich tot de rechtsstaat, culturele ontwikkeling en verandering? Wat betekenen vrijplaatsen voor Amsterdam? Verdwijnen de laatste vrijplaatsen nu uit Amsterdam? Hoe kunnen we vrijplaatsen voor Amsterdam behouden?
Hierover gaat deze avond bij de Mobiele Eenheid, een sinds kort gekraakt sociaal centrum in het nog te ontwikkelen Hamerkwartier.
We bekijken dit onderwerp vanuit verschillende perspectieven en ervaringen. Zo komen verschillende bestaande vrijplaatsen (ADM, Mobiele Eenheid en Bajesdorp) aan het woord evenals mensen uit andere initiatieven (Urban Resort, Vrijplaatsen Akkoord).
Met elkaar proberen zij niet alleen te kijken naar wat de ervaring en het verleden ons vertellen maar ook wat de toekomst van vrijplaatsen in onze geliefde stad is en zou kunnen zijn.

AA talk #01 - Art and Autonomy / Past-Present-Future

Directe aanleiding is het recent verschenen boek: Art and Autonomy door Sebastian Olma.
Op deze vrijdagmiddag gaan we op de NDSM samen met de schrijver in gesprek over het boek.
De motieven en achtergronden van het onderwerp. Daarbij kijken we ook naar de lokale context van de broedplaats en verkennen we met elkaar toekomstperspectieven over de plaats en rol van de kunst in onze geindividualiseerde en neoliberale samenleving.
