Kombiná is a journey through contemporary Dutch Caribbean architecture. The documentary follows architect Lyongo Juliana on a 25-year journey across the Dutch Caribbean, exploring what contemporary Caribbean architecture truly means today. Through projects on Curaçao, Bonaire, Saba, and St. Maarten, the film reveals how architecture emerges from a rich fusion of cultures, histories, climates, and social realities. Just like Caribbean music and language, architecture is shaped by many influences. In the film, Lyongo reflects—together with young designers, students, clients, and residents—on how architecture can respond to social challenges, reflect local identity, and contribute to more inclusive and meaningful living environments.

About Kombina
What defines contemporary Caribbean architecture? We have asked ourselves this question many times while designing new projects on the Dutch Caribbean islands. After 25 years of work in the Caribbean we wanted to document our work and visualize the search for an answer to this question. Everyone knows what you mean when you talk about Caribbean music. Styles such as reggae, calypso, soca, salsa, zouk and merengue are known worldwide. This music emerged from a mix of African, European and other influences, characteristic of Caribbean culture. But architecture in the Caribbean is often reduced to the traditional styles. Curacao’s colorful facades, Bonaire’s historic slave houses, and Saba’s gingerbread trims. While beautiful, these images only scratch the surface of the islands’ architectural diversity and innovation. Especially when it comes to contemporary architecture, there has been very little documented—until now… So, what does contemporary Caribbean architecture actually look like? And what influence do climate, migration, and heritage, for example, have on it? For us, like the local music and language, architecture is a mix of influences. Our documentary Kombiná – which literally is translated as ‘mixed’ – tells the story of how our contemporary projects reflect the local culture.

About Lyongo Juliana
Lyongo Juliana is a Curaçaoan-Dutch architect whose work bridges the Netherlands and the Caribbean. Born in Utrecht and raised in Curaçao, he studied architecture at Pennsylvania State University before completing his education in Architecture and Urbanism at Eindhoven University of Technology. Over the past 25 years, Juliana has designed numerous projects in the Caribbean and the Netherlands, combining sensitivity to local culture and climate with a strong commitment to the social role of architecture. As founder of lyongo architecture, with offices in Amsterdam and Willemstad, Juliana advocates for more diverse and inclusive approaches to architecture and urban development. In 2020, he served as Architect in Residence at the Amsterdam Architecture Centre (Arcam), where he researched diversity and inclusivity in the built environment, and subsequently continued this work as a fellow in Pakhuis de Zwijger’s Designing Cities for All programme. His architectural projects include the Curaçao Medical Center and various residential, educational and urban developments across the Caribbean and the Netherlands.

About Caribbean Creativity
Caribbean Creativity is a Kingston- and Amsterdam-based non-profit organization that is committed to the programming and promotion of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema. Over the years, Caribbean Creativity has hosted over 350 screenings, including numerous premieres. In 2020, they launched YardVibes, a streaming platform featuring content from independent Caribbean and African filmmakers. YardVibes currently offers over 100 titles, including feature films, web series, documentaries, and short films, with new content added monthly. Over Kombina
Wat kenmerkt hedendaagse Caribische architectuur? Die vraag hebben we onszelf vaak gesteld bij het ontwerpen van nieuwe projecten op de Nederlands-Caribische eilanden. Na 25 jaar werken in het Caribisch gebied wilden we ons werk documenteren en onze zoektocht naar een antwoord op deze vraag in beeld brengen. Iedereen weet wat er bedoeld wordt als we het over Caribische muziek hebben. Stijlen als reggae, calypso, soca, salsa, zouk en merengue zijn wereldwijd bekend. Deze muziek is ontstaan uit een mix van Afrikaanse, Europese en andere invloeden, kenmerkend voor de Caribische cultuur. Maar architectuur in het Caribisch gebied wordt vaak gereduceerd tot traditionele stijlen: de kleurrijke gevels van Curaçao, de historische slavenhuisjes van Bonaire en het karakteristieke sierwerk van Saba. Hoe mooi deze beelden ook zijn, ze laten slechts een klein deel zien van de architectonische diversiteit en vernieuwing op de eilanden. Vooral over hedendaagse architectuur is tot nu toe maar weinig gedocumenteerd. Hoe ziet hedendaagse Caribische architectuur er dan eigenlijk uit? En welke invloed hebben bijvoorbeeld klimaat, migratie en erfgoed daarop? Voor ons is architectuur, net als de lokale muziek en taal, een mix van invloeden. Onze documentaire Kombiná – wat letterlijk ‘gemengd’ betekent – vertelt het verhaal van hoe onze hedendaagse projecten de lokale cultuur weerspiegelen.

Over Lyongo Juliana
Lyongo Juliana is een Curaçaos-Nederlandse architect wiens werk Nederland en het Caribisch gebied met elkaar verbindt. Hij werd geboren in Utrecht en groeide op op Curaçao. Hij studeerde architectuur aan Pennsylvania State University en voltooide vervolgens zijn opleiding in Architecture and Urbanism aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. In de afgelopen 25 jaar heeft Juliana talrijke projecten ontworpen in het Caribisch gebied en Nederland, waarbij hij aandacht voor de lokale cultuur en het klimaat combineert met een sterke betrokkenheid bij de maatschappelijke rol van architectuur. Als oprichter van lyongo architecture, met kantoren in Amsterdam en Willemstad, pleit Juliana voor meer diverse en inclusieve benaderingen van architectuur en stedelijke ontwikkeling. In 2020 was hij Architect in Residence bij het Architectuurcentrum Amsterdam (Arcam), waar hij onderzoek deed naar diversiteit en inclusiviteit in de gebouwde omgeving. Vervolgens zette hij dit werk voort als fellow binnen het programma Designing Cities for All van Pakhuis de Zwijger. Tot zijn architectuurprojecten behoren het Curaçao Medical Center en diverse woningbouw-, onderwijs- en stedelijke ontwikkelingsprojecten in het Caribisch gebied en Nederland.

Over Caribbean Creativity
Caribbean Creativity is een in Kingston en Amsterdam gevestigde non-profitorganisatie die zich sinds 2008 inzet voor de programmering en promotie van Caribische cinema. Door de jaren heen heeft Caribbean Creativity meer dan 350 vertoningen georganiseerd, waaronder tal van premières. In 2020 lanceerde ze YardVibes, een streamingplatform met werk van onafhankelijke Caribische en Afrikaanse filmmakers. YardVibes biedt momenteel meer dan 100 titels, waaronder speelfilms, webseries
