#GetInvolved

This series is part of the Plein Theater program for co-creation, in which we invite you to participate, and curated by creative community producer Lorenzo García-Andrade Llamas.  Read more on our page Community >

We invite you to an extended program dedicated to radiance: light in excess of necessity. Taking place on the eve of the summer solstice, the gathering celebrates that which extends beyond itself; shining, spilling, reflecting, refracting, scattering, emanating and enduring.

Through an afternoon and evening of swimming, music, performance, collective making and shared meals, we will gather around the light that, at this time of year, stretches the days unwilling to leave.

Small Miracles

Small Miracles is a series of interdisciplinary programs that tend to the existing and possible communities of Plein Theater. Taking place across different Saturdays throughout the year, the series brings together diverse artistic practices in extended, durational formats.

Each Saturday is dedicated to a word—or a word-mode—that serves as an invitation to explore the possibilities a theater offers for coming together. With a focus on desirable abundances and communal luxury, the programming of Small Miracles leans toward words aligned with these notions.

#3: Radiance

On the eve of the summer solstice, we invite you to a gathering dedicated to the excess of light at this time of year and the different ways it emanates. Conceived around the shifting moments of the day, the program attends the changing qualities of light and the situations and relations they produce. As the day progresses and the light transforms, so too does the gathering.

Program

The program unfolds through a series of phases:

15:00–18:00 - Swimming & Collective Making

Throughout the afternoon, a swimming pool for the feet designed by Yelizaveta Strakhova and hosted by Andrea González will be open on the terrace.

rots and Adil from Ekat Yawa will host Long Shadow Blue Sky, a cyanotype workshop. We will be exposing different "things" and "parts" to the two different chemicals that were the precursor (voorloper) to photography. The resulting works will be developed and installed on the walls of the theater later that day.

Lina Bravo will host an Earth Consultory, inviting participants to meet different clays, sands, pigments and soils gathered from Amsterdam and beyond. We will bind them into watercolors using the sweet solar energy of honey and botanic gums.

Simon Marschall will offer the workshop Guardening What, through conversations, movement, and ways of perception we will explore ways to destructure gardening as an expression of control.

18:00–19:00 - Exhibition Opening & Dinner

We will open the exhibition resulting from the cyanotype workshop and share a dinner prepared by Anna Celda.

19:00–21:00 — Piano Bar & DJ Set by Radna Rumping

For two hours, community members and guests are invited to play the piano in the theater´s café. Contributions may last anywhere between a single song and ten minutes. In the intervals between performances, Radna Rumping will provide a continuous musical accompaniment.

Confirmed piano players include:

Alec Mateo

Bin Koh

Jimena Casas

More participants to be announced.

21:00–21:30 - Performance

The Piano Bar will be followed by a performance by Billy Morgan, presenting a new study combining movement and self-produced music.

21:30–Late - Celebration

DJ set and celebration into the night.

Cyanotype Workshop & Piano Bar

On the eve of the summer solstice, we invite you to contribute to Radiance, a day-long gathering dedicated to the excess of light and the many ways it travels.

15:00–18:00 — Cyanotype Workshop

rots and Adil from ekat yawa will host long shadow blue sky, a collective cyanotype workshop. We will be exposing different "things" and "parts" to the two different chemicals that were the precursor (voorloper) to photography. Throughout the afternoon, we will work together to create a temporary exhibition that will be installed on the walls of Plein Theater and opened later that evening. Come and make your own cyanotype on the longest day of the year. What does the light reflect or retrace?

No previous experience is necessary.

19:00–21:00 — Piano Bar

As the day moves into evening, the piano in Plein Theater's café will be opened to friends, neighbors, artists, musicians and anyone who would like to share a song. Participants are invited to play for anywhere between a single piece and ten minutes. Classical music, pop songs, improvisations, unfinished compositions, standards, experiments and unexpected encounters with the instrument are all welcome.

In the intervals between performances, Radna Rumping will accompany the evening with a DJ set.

If you would like to participate in the Piano Bar, please contact: Lorenzo García Andrade (lorenzo@plein-theater.nl)

Yelizaveta Strakhova (b. 1993, Russia) is an Amsterdam-based spatial practitioner at the intersection of art and architecture. She uses water's connective and transformative force as a lens through which to explore societal values and dynamics, reflecting broader cultural and environmental narratives. She experiments with formats of social gatherings and small-scale space-making as instant ways of critically responding to a variety of contexts and implementing and testing scenarios for the alternative development of landscapes.

Andrea González works with images. Her research revolves around spatial politics, infrastructure, and territory through a possibilist and experimental lens. By exploring new forms of storytelling, she immerses herself in material culture, reappropriating and re-signifying fragments. Her work revisits underrepresented narratives, questions editorial practices, and develops and uncovers new forms of communication.
