Women's Work: Nancy

Cinema of the Dam'd is proud to present Women's Work, an ongoing series of recent films by emerging female directors. Tonight we present Christina Choe's remarkable and enigmatic debut feature Nancy (2018).

Working class Nancy (Andrea Riseborough) cares for her ailing mother (Ann Dowd), while nursing fantasies of a better life. An aspiring fiction writer, she spins elaborate online hoaxes, hoping to reinvent herself. When she makes contact with Leo (Steve Buscemi) and Ellen (J. Smith-Cameron), a distraught couple looking for their daughter, who was kidnapped 30 years ago, Nancy wonders if her own search is over. Christina's Choe's fascinating character study follows Nancy's fraught journey from the social margins into the loving arms of a family longing to be made whole. Riseborough (last seen in Panos Cosmatos' Mandy) gives a deeply moving and chilling performance as a misfit desperate to connect. Choe lets the narrative unfold like a delicate mystery, never losing careful sight of her enigmatic protagonist. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Christina Choe, 2018, USA, 85 minutes. In English.
