Gaudeamus is an unmissable part of the current international (new) music scene.
The annual Gaudeamus Muziekweek festival has been held in Utrecht since 2011. It is the international meeting place for young composers and musical pioneers. The festival culminates in the presentation of the Gaudeamus Award, an incentive prize for composers under 30.
International editions of Gaudeamus Muziekweek are making waves around the world. In January 2012, the very first Gaudeamus Muziekweek New York took place while in April 2014, Gaudeamus Canada was staged in Toronto and Montreal.”

Saturday Night Live | September 10, 2016 | 19:00 - 23:50 | Tivolivredenburg 
The most exciting part of the festival this year is our “Saturday Night Live” program that takes place on the (you guessed it) Saturday night of our festival, September 10th. This evening features a huge mix of new music in many genres: Electro- Acoustic, Post Pop, Egyptian Contemporary, Experimental Jazz, Art Rock, Improvisation, Sound Installations, Post Retro, and others.
SNL is a free form and casual evening in Tivolivredenburg where concert goers are encouraged to move between different concerts, sound installations, and artistic spaces with beer and wine in hand.
Some of the most anticipated performers include cellist Oliver Coates, Kapok, a collaboration between Oerknal and De Beren Gieren, and Gunnar Gunnsteinsson.
The one Saturday Night Live ticket will grant you access to any of the 14 separate concerts and 4 installations that are to take place. This is sure to be a beautiful, interesting, and thought-provoking night. Find out more on the Gaudeamus Muziekweek website:

Notable Artists:

Oliver Coates is a cellist, composer and producer based in London. 
In the past year he has performed solo shows in China, Russia, Brazil, Egypt and Australia, and made his New York debut at Le Poisson Rouge. He was the winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist Award and is an Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre.
He has released records on Prah Recordings and Slip, and collaborates with the London Contemporary Orchestra, Jonny Greenwood (on The Master and There Will Be Blood), Mica Levi (on Under the Skin) and the visual artist Lawrence Lek (on the award-winning video piece Unreal Estate).
With Lek, he has recently presented the world premiere of a new work,QE3, at Glasgow International. His new LP, Upstepping, was released on Prah in May, and he has programmed the Southbank Centre’s DEEP∞MINIMALISM festival taking place in June. In the autumn he will release a collaborative record with Mica Levi on Slip/Warp.

Kapok is one of the most recognizable young bands on the Dutch music scene today. The band is known for their rhythmic fireworks and infectious interaction, and for the fierce, unpredictable energy of their live shows. Kapok borrows from many different kinds of music, including funk rock, classical music, free improv and African music – a collection of influences that might sound unlikely, but flows together quite naturally in their music.
The first thing you notice about Kapok is the unusual instrumentation. There is no bass, Remco Menting’s drum kit is one of a kind, and Timon Koomen conjures up colourful sound worlds on his guitar. You might know the French horn as an instrument from the classical tradition, but in the hands of Morris Kliphuis this is quickly forgotten. Kliphuis, one of the few jazz hornists in the world, sings, growls and grooves on his instrument as if it was made for jazz. Onstage, the band interprets every song anew, which means no two concerts are ever alike.
Since their first encounter in the recording studio in 2011, which led to their debut album Flatlands, Kapok has played at many festivals and concert halls in The Netherlands, including twice at the North Sea Jazz Festival. The band also performs internationally, and won the Dutch Jazz Competition in 2012, the European Jazz Competition in 2013, and received an Edison, the Dutch equivalent of a Grammy, for their second album Kapok in 2014.
Kapok would like to take many more people with them on their musical trip. They’ve only just set off.

De Beren Gieren worden beschouwd als de avontuurlijkste muziekgroep in de Benelux. Sinds hun oprichting in 2009 hebben ze geen moment stilgezeten. Hun tweede album a raveling(2013) zorgde voor de internationale doorbraak en The Detour Fish, een live-opname met de Portugese trompettiste Susana Santos Silva, werd eind 2014 als uitgebracht op het toonaangevende platenlabel Clean Feed en overal lovend ontvangen. 
In 2015 speelden ze op Jazz Middelheim en verscheen ook hun derde trio album One Mirrors Many. Zowel in België als internationaal wordt de CD positief onthaald, Jazzism prees het album zelfs als meest invloedrijke en actuele album van het moment, dus dat beloofd. (“Dit is het trio op zijn best, met gedetailleerd spel, een meeslepende piano, forse rockachtige injecties, verstilling en een fikse climax.” – De Standaard)
Naast hun innige samenwerking met Susana, speelden De Beren Gieren samen met andere internationale grootheden als Jan Klare, Jean-Yves Evrard, Ernst Reijseger, Joachim Badenhorst, Marc Ribot en Louis Sclavis.
De muziekwereld gelooft in De Beren Gieren. Zo traden ze al op in Duitsland, Portugal, Frankrijk, Noorwegen, Zwitserland, Luxemburg, Oostenrijk, Frankrijk, Italië, Spanje, Hongarije, Roemenië, Slovenië, Estland en Marokko en waren te gast op grote festivals als North Sea Jazz, Trondheim Jazzfest, Middelheim en Ljubljana Jazz en internationale showcase-festivals als 12 Points en Jazzahead! Bremen. Ze waren Artist in Residence van het Gentse Kunstencentrum Vooruit en ontvingen drie prijzen op Jazz Hoeilaart, waaronder de hoofdprijs.
Hun groepsnaam klinkt inmiddels tot ver voorbij de Belgische landsgrenzen. Benieuwd waar de Beren in de toekomst nog op zullen jagen.

Oerknal! is a collective of young professional musicians based in The Netherlands. We are united by a passion for new creative experiences and the belief that music should be presented in an intense, visceral manner.
We engage in cross-disciplinary collaborations, looking for new and unique artistic overlaps. We eschew traditional concert hall etiquette and perform in non-traditional venues (galleries, jazz clubs, reclaimed spaces), experimenting with new models of concert presentation. Most importantly, we are committed to new music. Music with a modern sense and a contemporary sensibility that belongs to, is a product of, and was written for no other time than the present.
We find any barrier between performer (us) and audience (you) uninteresting and unsustainable. We hope to break down barriers and present music in a way that makes you more involved in the process. We want to connect with you directly and openly, creating an intimate, informal environment optimal for intense musical experiences. 
We view each performance as an experiment, an attempt to discover something new, something exciting, something meaningful - discovery for discovery’s sake, for the thrill of immediate, unabashed experience. We promise thought-provoking, engaging experiences; artistic happenings of the highest level.
