Have you finished binging the latest season of Black Mirror? The return of Netflix's wildly popular sci-fi anthology series has left us hungry for more visionary tales of technological dystopia. In this program, we look back at our favorite examples of future shock cinema: heady films that explore the ways technology is reshaping society and human subjectivity. Please join us for a special encore matinee screening of Satoshi Kon's anime masterpiece Paprika.

In the not-too-distant future, rogue psychotherapist Dr. Atsuko Chiba uses a revolutionary device called the DC Mini to enter her patient's dreams, appearing as her alter ego Paprika. When a prototype is stolen, she dives into the dream world to find the culprit before minds are destroyed. Satoshi Kon's bizarre and beautiful anime swansong brings this brainy premise to colorful and vivid life, filling the frame with hallucinatory imagery. Its dense, detailed rendering of the dreamscape makes Christopher Nolan's similarly themed Inception look like a drab flowchart by comparison. Part mystery, part sci-fi, Paprika transports us to a future where the border between dreams and reality has all but dissolved, and where the human unconscious is the final frontier of social control. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Satoshi Kon, 2006, Japan, 90 min. In Japanese with English subtitles.
